Description:
Bulb ovoid, 1-1.5 cm thick; tunics subcoriaceous, grey; bulblets greyish-brown or violet, obscurely parallel-nerved. Stem 15-65 cm tall, covered to l/4 or sometimes to the middle with scabrous or rarely smooth leaf sheaths. Leaves 2(3), semicylindric, canaliculate, 1-3 mm wide, fistulous, scabrous, rarely nearly smooth, slightly shorter to slightly longer than the stem. Spathe 1/2 as long as the umbel, acuminate, persistent. Umbel without or with bulblets, or flowerless with bulblets alone, usually hemispherical to spherical, dense, many-flowered. Pedicels equal, 2-3(5) times as long as perianth, subtended by bracteoles. Perianth campanulate; tepals azure-blue, with a darker midvein, rarely white, 4-6 mm long, equal, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, the inner ones slightly broader. Filaments 3/4 as long to nearly as long as tepals, at base connate and adnate to perianth, the outer ones triangular-subulate, the inner ones at base twice as broad as outer, obtusely toothed. Style slightly exserted.
